Chapter 6

Headlights swept across the oceanfront windows.
The mansion’s golden warmth suddenly felt exposed.
Vanessa turned toward the front entrance.
Then back at Elena.
“What did you do?”
Elena did not answer immediately.
She looked at Daniel.
Her husband.
The man who had let his family laugh while she served them dinner like hired staff.
He stared at the envelope in Vanessa’s hand, breathing shallowly.
“Elena,” he said softly.
Not apologetically.
Carefully.
As if trying to calm a door before it locked.
“No,” Elena said.
One word.
Daniel flinched.
The doorbell rang through the mansion.
The sound traveled from the entrance hall into the ballroom, past the chandeliers, over the untouched champagne glass, around Margaret’s empty chair.
No one moved.
Vanessa gripped the envelope harder.
Several guests lowered their crystal glasses.
The hidden camera continued recording.
Elena stepped toward the entrance, not rushing.
Her posture was no longer that of a woman serving plates.
It was the posture of someone carrying authority she had been forced to hide until the room deserved it.
Through the open doorway, two uniformed officers became visible beside a female attorney holding a tablet.
They did not enter far enough to arrest anyone.
They did not explain the envelope.
They did not seize property.
Their presence alone was enough.
Elena looked back at Vanessa.
