Chapter 3

Daniel Hale had not always been silent.
That was what hurt Elena most.
When they first married, he laughed at his family’s arrogance.
Called Vanessa unbearable.
Said Margaret was old-fashioned but sharp.
Promised Elena she would never be treated like an outsider.
Then the mansion changed him.
Or maybe it revealed him.
The Hale family treated the Newport estate like proof of superiority. Every party, every dinner, every photograph on the balcony facing the Atlantic carried the same message.
We belong above other people.
Elena never cared about belonging above anyone.
She only wanted to belong beside her husband.
But Daniel started correcting her in front of guests.
“Not now, Elena.”
“Don’t push back.”
“You know how Vanessa gets.”
Then came the dinners where Elena was expected to help.
Then expected to cook.
Then expected to serve.
Each request arrived wrapped in tradition.
Family style.
Old Newport manners.
Respect for Margaret.
But Margaret never asked Elena to bow.
Vanessa did.
And Daniel let her.
At the birthday dinner, Elena watched Daniel sit near his sister while she carried plates.
He did not look comfortable.
But discomfort without courage was just decoration.
When Vanessa called Elena staff, Daniel’s first instinct was not outrage.
It was embarrassment.
Not for Elena.
For the scene.
