Chapter 8

The medical alert did not become a medical outcome.

No doctor rushed dramatically into the ballroom.

No diagnosis was announced.

No final condition was revealed.

But the sound was enough to remind everyone that Margaret Hale was upstairs.

Alive.

Absent.

And perhaps far less powerless than her family had hoped.

Elena’s face tightened.

She had heard that alert before.

Margaret’s nurse had explained it quietly.

If it sounded, the upstairs room needed attention.

Elena turned toward the attorney.

The attorney nodded once and spoke softly into her phone, not revealing details.

Vanessa clutched the envelope.

“What is happening upstairs?”

Elena looked at her.

“Now you care?”

Vanessa’s mouth closed.

Daniel moved toward the staircase.

One officer shifted slightly but did not block him.

The attorney spoke for the first time.

“Mr. Hale, remain in the dining room until medical staff confirms access is appropriate.”

Daniel stopped.

The word access hit the table harder than it should have.

Access to Margaret.

Access to rooms.

Access to documents.

Access to the house.

Vanessa looked down at the envelope as if it had suddenly become hot.

Elena stepped nearer to Margaret’s empty chair.

The stained apron lay across it like evidence.

Vanessa whispered, “She gave this to you?”

Elena’s eyes did not soften.

“She trusted me with it.”

That hurt the Hales more than any accusation.
