Chapter 17 - MOLLY AND SCOUTMolly refused to let Scout out of her sight for months.
The teddy bear became evidence briefly because the bottle had been stored inside it.
After photographs and preservation steps, it was returned.
She checked the overalls pocket immediately.
Empty.
“Where’s the medicine?”
“Police have it.”
“Are they giving it to Owen?”
“No.”
“Then why do they need it?”
“To understand what happened.”
She thought.
“Am I in trouble for taking it?”
“No.”
“You said stealing is wrong.”
“I did.”
She looked at me with the brutal logic of seven.
“So?”
I answered:
“You took medicine because you thought an adult was throwing away something Owen needed. I wish you had told me immediately instead of hiding it, but you were trying to protect him.”
“Should I steal again?”
“No.”
“Confusing.”
Correct.
So we made a new rule.
If an adult tells Molly to hide medicine, injury, touching, weapons, dangerous driving, or something that makes her afraid:
Tell another safe adult.
Do not investigate.
Do not collect evidence.

Do not become the family detective.
The teddy bear could go back to being a teddy bear.
