Chapter 18 - THE MAIN TRUTHThe central truth was not that Linda wanted to poison Owen.

She did not.
It was not that Daniel wanted his son sick.
He did not.
It was not a secret plan to remove me from the family.
No affair.
No insurance policy.
No custody conspiracy.
The truth was smaller and, to me, more frightening.
Linda believed antibiotics had harmed Daniel when he was a child.
She saw Owen’s rash and treated her fear as superior to Dr. Sterling’s instructions.
Daniel believed his mother might be right.
He also believed I would refuse to consider stopping the medication.
Instead of calling the pediatrician, he sided with Linda privately.
They withheld most of the cefdinir.
Replaced several expected doses with diluted acetaminophen so I would not notice.
Falsified the dosing log.
Minimized Owen’s persistent fever.
Delayed calling the doctor.
And told themselves every temporary drop in temperature justified continuing.
At every stage, one honest phone call could have stopped it.
They did not make it.
Because calling would mean admitting they had bypassed me.
The cover-up became easier than reversing course.
That was the main truth.
Not hatred.

Entitlement.
The belief that because they thought they were protecting Owen, they no longer needed my consent or the pediatrician’s guidance.
