Chapter 1 - The Child on the BalconyJoanna Mercer knew something was wrong before the apartment door fully opened.

The living room lights were blazing, yet the apartment felt unnaturally quiet. Winter garlands hung above the dining table. Half-empty glasses covered the counter. A broken tumbler glittered beside the balcony door.
Then Joanna saw Louisa.
Her three-year-old daughter stood barefoot on the freezing balcony in pale pajamas, facing the brick wall. Her tiny shoulders shook beneath the icy wind.
Her soft brown hair was gone.
Every curl Joanna had kissed before leaving for her business trip had been shaved close to the scalp.
“Louisa!”
Joanna dropped her travel bag and ran outside.
Louisa turned. Her lips were pale, her eyes swollen from crying.
“Mommy… I didn’t take anything.”
Joanna wrapped the child inside her coat and lifted her. Louisa clung desperately to her neck.
Inside, Lydia sat in an armchair as though nothing unusual had happened. Heather lounged on the couch with a smug smile. Walter stood near the dining table with his arms folded.
Joanna’s husband, Elmer, was nowhere in sight.
“What did you do to her?”
Lydia pointed sharply at Louisa.
“She learned her lesson—thieves deserve shame.”
“What did she steal?”
“My gold bracelet.”
Joanna stared at her mother-in-law.
“You shaved a three-year-old child and locked her outside over jewelry?”
“She needed to understand consequences.”
Heather lowered her face to hide a smile.
Joanna placed Louisa safely behind her and stepped toward Lydia.
Walter charged forward.
His palm struck Joanna across the face, throwing her into the glass balcony door. Her lip split against her teeth.
Louisa screamed.
Joanna pushed herself upright and shielded her daughter.
“This is abuse. Never touch my daughter again.”
Walter pointed toward the hallway.
“Walk out that door, and you’re finished with this family.”
Joanna did not hesitate.
She entered the bedroom, opened a suitcase, and swept clothes, passports, family papers, Louisa’s stuffed bunny, and a savings card inside. Lydia tried to block the front entrance.
Joanna knocked her hand away.
Then she carried Louisa into the cold without looking back.
A modest hotel three blocks away had one available room.
Louisa fell asleep beneath two blankets after Joanna warmed her feet and cleaned a scratch near her ear. Joanna sat beside her, gently touching the shaved scalp.
Then she remembered the camera.
Six months earlier, cash disappeared from Joanna’s desk. Elmer insisted she had misplaced it. Joanna quietly installed a small living-room camera behind a framed photograph.
She opened the security application.
Heather entered Lydia’s bedroom, removed the gold bracelet from a drawer, and slipped it into her handbag.
Twenty minutes later, Lydia confronted her.
Heather showed her the jewelry.
Instead of demanding its return, Lydia glanced toward Louisa playing on the carpet.
“Put it in the child’s backpack,” Lydia said.
Heather hesitated.
“Walter will cut me off if he learns I took it.”
“Then he won’t learn.”
Lydia removed an electric trimmer from the bathroom.
Heather fastened the stolen bracelet around her own wrist while Lydia dragged a chair toward Louisa.
Joanna began preserving the footage.
Then another figure entered the recording.
Elmer walked through the apartment door two hours before Joanna returned.
He looked at Louisa’s shaved head.
He looked at the freezing balcony.
Then he told his mother:

“Good. Now make sure Joanna gets angry enough to leave.”
👉 Heather was the thief, but Elmer’s arrival proved Louisa’s humiliation was part of a larger plan against Joanna.
