Chapter 10 - The Marriage ContractElmer’s employment agreement was dated four months before he met Joanna.

Walter promised him a company vice presidency if he gained access to Miriam’s trust, financial correspondence, and daughter.

The contract required weekly reports.

Joanna’s preferences.

Her friends.

Her medications.

Her relationship with Miriam.

Her fears about motherhood.

Elmer had converted intimacy into intelligence.

The reports continued through their courtship.

After their wedding, the frequency decreased.

One entry read:

Joanna suspects nothing. I no longer want Walter involved in the marriage.

Another read:

I will not provide Miriam’s medical file. This assignment is over.

For nearly a year, Elmer appeared to resist.

Then Miriam died.

The payments resumed.

Elmer began reporting again.

Joanna struggled with the contradiction.

He may have loved her.

He still chose access over honesty.

He may have attempted to leave Walter’s plan.

He returned when money and inheritance became available.

Love did not erase the contract.

The master ledger documented Walter’s pension theft, falsified guardianships, and payments to Bernard, Dr. Saye, and multiple law firms.

One payment went to Diane Foster.

Joanna looked toward her attorney.

Diane did not deny receiving it.

“My firm represented Mercer Development before I represented Miriam.”

“How much?”

“Two hundred thousand dollars.”

“For what?”

“Drafting the first emergency family-trust structure.”

The same structure later used to target Joanna.

Diane insisted she left the firm after discovering Walter’s intentions. Miriam hired her privately to build the countermeasure.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Miriam believed disclosure would make you reject my help.”

“You both decided what I could handle.”

“Yes.”

Again.

Joanna removed Diane as sole legal representative and requested independent counsel review every filing.

Diane accepted the decision.

Before stepping back, she gave Rachel her complete archive, including documents that could expose her own role.

That did not prove innocence.

It demonstrated willingness to face scrutiny.

The master ledger also revealed Bernard had received voting shares through a shell company. The emergency custody order against Joanna was part of a prearranged sequence.

Federal investigators entered his chambers.

Bernard had vanished.

A handwritten court order remained on his desk.

It authorized Elmer to take temporary custody of Louisa and transport her to Dr. Saye’s clinic.

The order had not been filed yet.

Elmer needed only to add a date.

Rachel issued an alert for both men.

At the hotel, Joanna moved Louisa to a protected family suite under a false name. Sophie and her mother were relocated separately.

Dr. Naomi remained involved only as Louisa’s physician. Helen Brooks assumed temporary administration of the trust.

For one quiet hour, no one called.

Louisa sat on the bed drawing hair around a picture of herself.

“Will it grow back?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Grandma said bad girls lose it.”

Joanna held her.

“Grandma was wrong.”

A knock sounded.

Hotel security announced a package had arrived under police escort.

Inside was Louisa’s first haircut box from infancy, the soft curls Joanna had saved, and a video tablet.

Miriam appeared on-screen live.

Older, thinner, unmistakably alive.

“Joanna.”

Joanna could not speak.

“I am sorry.”

“Where are you?”

“Close enough to see what Walter is doing.”

“You watched my daughter?”

“I knew they planned a custody incident. I did not know they would shave her.”

“You knew enough to warn me.”

“If I contacted you, Walter would know I survived.”

“You chose your investigation.”

Miriam’s face broke.

“Yes.”

The admission sounded like every other protector.

Then she delivered the warning.

“Elmer is not with Walter anymore. He has Bernard and the remaining ledger. He intends to expose his father and take control of Louisa’s trust as the cooperating parent.”

The hotel door alarm activated.

Someone had used Elmer’s court order at the front desk.

👉 Miriam finally contacted Joanna, but she revealed Elmer had turned against Walter only to seize Louisa’s trust for himself.
