Chapter 14 - The Woman with Diane’s FaceThe woman in Walter’s vehicle was named Diana Foster.

Diane’s identical twin.

They had been separated after their parents’ divorce at age six. Diane lived with their mother and became an attorney. Diana remained with their father and later worked as a corporate investigator.

Walter recruited Diana years earlier because she could enter law offices, meetings, and court buildings while witnesses believed she was Diane.

Some evidence attributed to Joanna’s attorney had been created by her twin.

The photograph of “Diane” accepting Mercer money may have shown either woman.

The signature on Walter’s first guardianship documents might belong to Diana.

Northgate? No—Mercer’s system had used identical identities to contaminate proof.

Diane stared at the live feed.

“I thought she died.”

Diana disappeared after a warehouse fire twelve years earlier. No body was recovered.

Another false death inside Walter’s network.

Walter contacted Joanna directly.

He would release Diana and surrender the original birth record if Joanna entered the apartment’s hidden room alone and signed a statement restoring his company authority.

“No,” Joanna said.

“You’re risking her life.”

“You abducted her.”

“Diane helped Miriam build the trap that destroyed my family.”

“Your choices destroyed it.”

Walter’s voice sharpened.

“Your mother used you. Elmer used you. Diane used you. At least I never pretended power was love.”

Joanna looked toward Louisa’s hidden bedroom.

“You used a child as paperwork.”

Walter ended the call.

Diana’s vehicle tracker moved toward the closed Mercer Development headquarters.

Federal teams surrounded the building.

Miriam warned that Walter had installed document-destruction systems beneath the executive floor. A direct breach could erase the guardianship registry’s financial links.

Joanna refused to let evidence become an excuse for delay.

“People first. Records second.”

Rachel authorized entry.

Diana was found inside a conference room, alive but injured. Walter had already left through a service tunnel.

She claimed she had worked for him willingly at first.

She posed as Diane, delivered documents, and accessed trust files. Later, she tried to leave. Walter staged the warehouse fire and kept her under a false identity.

Diana admitted signing some guardianship papers.

She also preserved copies that Diane never knew existed.

The records independently confirmed Walter’s pension theft and Bernard’s court payments.

They also contained one payment from Miriam.

Miriam had paid Diana five hundred thousand dollars after the staged death.

Joanna looked at her mother.

“Why?”

“To keep her inside Walter’s organization as an informant.”

“Did Diane know?”

“No.”

“You funded someone impersonating her.”

“I needed access.”

Again, Miriam had accepted harm as operational cost.

Diane stepped away from both her mother? Miriam is not her mother. From Miriam and her twin.

No reunion solved years of stolen identity.

The original birth record remained missing.

Walter sent one final message.

A photograph showed him inside the modest hotel room Joanna had first used after leaving the apartment.

The room was empty now.

He sat beside the bed holding Louisa’s stuffed bunny.

The bunny Joanna had carried from the family home.

She looked toward the protected suite.

Louisa’s bunny was still beside her.

Another duplicate.

Walter had been inside the original hotel room after police cleared it.

He had found something hidden beneath the floor.

In the photograph, he held a steel evidence box marked with Miriam’s name.

Miriam became pale.

“That box should have been destroyed.”

“What is it?” Joanna asked.

“The original recording from the night Elmer agreed to marry you.”

Walter opened the lid.

Inside was not a tape.

It was a newborn hospital bracelet bearing Joanna’s name.

The infant named on it was not Louisa.

The date was twenty-nine years earlier.

Joanna’s own birth.

Walter smiled toward the camera.

“Miriam still hasn’t told you who raised the wrong daughter.”

👉 Diana’s rescue exposed Miriam’s use of another woman’s identity, while Walter uncovered a birth secret suggesting Joanna herself had been placed in the wrong family.
