Chapter 3 - The Emergency OrderElmer destroyed the camera.

He could not destroy the cloud archive.

The security application preserved thirty days of footage on an external server registered solely to Joanna. Rachel requested an emergency forensic copy before Elmer’s attorney could challenge access.

The archive revealed that the apartment had been used for meetings whenever Joanna traveled.

Walter met with accountants after midnight.

Lydia prepared statements for relatives to memorize.

Heather entered Joanna’s bedroom and photographed her prescriptions.

Elmer copied signatures from old birthday cards.

The family had studied Joanna long before Louisa’s punishment.

At dawn, two sheriff’s deputies arrived at the hotel with an emergency custody order.

Lydia stood behind them wearing an expensive cream coat.

Elmer was not present.

The order appointed Lydia as Louisa’s temporary caregiver pending an evaluation of Joanna’s mental condition. It described the child’s shaved head as evidence of “maternal instability.”

Diane read the judge’s name.

Bernard Cole.

Joanna’s maternal uncle.

Miriam’s younger brother.

Joanna had not seen him since her mother’s funeral.

“He should have disclosed the family relationship,” Diane said.

Lydia extended her hands toward Louisa.

“Come to Grandma.”

Louisa buried her face against Joanna’s chest.

Dr. Naomi stepped into the hotel hallway carrying the certified medical report.

“The patient has not been cleared for transfer.”

Lydia smiled coldly.

“This is a hotel, not a hospital.”

Naomi held up the evidence form.

“The child was treated for cold exposure and an injury caused by restraint. Any removal must be reviewed by the reporting agency.”

Rachel contacted an independent magistrate.

The custody order was temporarily stayed while the medical evidence and camera footage were examined.

The deputies stepped back.

Lydia’s composure cracked.

“You are destroying this family over hair.”

Joanna pointed toward Louisa.

“You put her barefoot in freezing weather.”

“I was teaching her not to steal.”

“You knew Heather stole the bracelet.”

For the first time, Lydia looked frightened.

“You altered that video.”

“The original is already with police.”

Lydia moved closer.

“You have no idea what Walter will do when he loses control of the trust.”

“What does Walter have to do with my mother’s trust?”

Lydia looked toward Diane.

The attorney’s face remained unreadable.

Before leaving, Lydia dropped a hotel key card onto the hallway carpet.

It belonged to Joanna’s room.

Hotel security records showed the card had been created thirty minutes before the deputies arrived.

Someone inside the hotel had issued duplicate access.

Rachel searched the room.

Beneath Louisa’s pillow, she found Joanna’s prescription bottle.

It had not been there earlier.

Several tablets were missing.

The family intended to claim Joanna was drugged while caring for Louisa.

A hotel housekeeper admitted Elmer paid her to enter the room. He told her Joanna had forgotten essential medication and needed help.

The housekeeper had also placed a second object inside the bathroom trash can.

An empty whiskey miniature.

Joanna did not drink.

Rachel preserved both items.

“This was meant to support the custody petition.”

Naomi requested toxicology tests for Joanna and Louisa. Both were negative.

Elmer’s planned evidence had arrived too late.

Then Joanna’s phone received a video from an unknown number.

Walter sat inside the apartment with Heather beside him.

The gold bracelet remained around Heather’s wrist.

Walter held Joanna’s mother’s original trust agreement over a lit fireplace.

“Come back before noon,” he said, “or Miriam’s last protection burns with everything else.”

Heather leaned toward him.

“You said you wouldn’t destroy it.”

Walter struck her across the face.

The video ended.
