Chapter 17 - THE MOTHER WHO ALLOWED THE ABDUCTIONLaura Grant asked to hold Sophie.

The child advocate said no until the circumstances of the van were understood.

Sophie called for her anyway.

“Mommy!”

Joanna heard the word from the adjoining medical room.

It hurt.

She did not interpret the pain as evidence that Sophie belonged in her arms instead.

Laura had raised the girl through fever, nightmares, first words, birthdays, and ordinary mornings. Biology could not turn those years into an administrative mistake.

Laura entered a recorded interview with her own attorney.

Three weeks earlier, Caroline had approached her using the name Margaret Cole. She showed Laura hospital photographs, DNA projections, and Walter’s guardianship files.

Laura already knew something about Sophie’s adoption was wrong.

Her late husband, Mark Grant, had worked at a Mercer construction site. After a machinery accident killed him, Walter’s employee-benefit office controlled the family’s insurance and survivor payments.

When Laura asked for Sophie’s sealed adoption record, the company threatened to suspend the benefits supporting their apartment.

Caroline promised answers.

“She said Walter planned to take Sophie because Louisa’s trust had activated,” Laura explained. “She said the only safe place was inside her evidence operation.”

“Did she instruct you to leave the decoy bunny near the hotel elevator?” Rachel asked.

“Yes.”

“Did you know Walter’s men would follow Sophie?”

“I believed federal officers would intercept them.”

“Were federal officers involved?”

“Caroline said they were.”

“Did you verify that?”

“No.”

Laura had allowed her daughter to become bait because she believed the danger was controlled.

Walter’s abductors took Sophie to the warehouse. Caroline’s people later entered through a second door, removed the girl, and placed a similarly dressed child-shaped training doll beneath the coat officers initially saw on the remote feed.

By the time police entered, Laura had been instructed to confirm Sophie’s identity quickly and leave with the child.

Rachel reviewed body-camera footage.

The girl officers brought out had kept her face buried against Laura’s neck. No independent professional had asked her name.

Caroline moved Sophie again that night.

“Why did you go with her?” Joanna asked through the secure line.

“She said the trust would reject Sophie unless the girls looked alike.”

“Did you know she intended to shave her?”

“No.”

Laura began shaking.

“When she brought out the clippers, I tried to stop her. Two guards held me.”

The van audio supported part of her account. Laura could be heard shouting while a child cried. Caroline said the hair would grow back and the biometric proof would last forever.

Laura had not shaved Sophie.

She had still created the circumstances that placed the child in Caroline’s hands.

“Why were you standing calmly behind her on the camera?” Joanna asked.

“Caroline said if I looked frightened, Walter would believe the operation had failed and send another team.”

“You were performing safety.”

“Yes.”

Like Elmer.

Like Miriam.

Like every adult who believed the right camera angle could transform danger into evidence.

Laura was arrested for child-endangerment conspiracy and obstruction. She was not charged as a participant in the original infant transfer.

Her release conditions prohibited unsupervised contact until family court and child specialists assessed the risk.

Sophie entered temporary care with Laura’s older sister, Amy Grant, whom she knew well.

Joanna requested no emergency custody order.

Instead, she asked for medical information and the right to send Sophie a simple recorded message.

“My name is Joanna. I am Louisa’s mother. Adults are learning that you and Louisa may have been born together. You are safe with Aunt Amy. No one is coming to change your name.”

Sophie watched the recording while holding Amy’s hand.

“Is she my other mommy?” she asked.

Amy answered carefully.

“She may be the woman who gave birth to you.”

“That’s not mommy.”

“No. It is different information.”

Sophie accepted that answer for the moment.

The neonatal bracelet recovered from Laura’s home contained Joanna’s maiden name, the same hospital date, and the code GIGI-2.

Laura had kept it locked in a box since Sophie was an infant.

Mark told her it came with the adoption documents.

The back carried Dr. Harold Saye’s initials.

Before officers could question him again, the private clinic’s fire alarm activated.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fertility archive was burning.

Dr. Saye had vanished.

👉 Laura had surrendered Sophie to a dangerous operation while believing it was controlled, and the physician who arranged the child’s first disappearance was now destroying the records that could explain why.
