Dr. Saye had stored older records inside a concrete imaging vault designed to protect radiology film. Firefighters recovered two delivery logs, a neonatal medication book, and a handwritten transfer schedule.
Joanna’s name appeared beside two infants.
Twin A was delivered at 2:14 a.m.
Twin B was delivered eleven minutes later.
Both girls breathed independently.
Neither died.
Joanna remembered awakening after surgery and being told the second embryo had failed before birth. Elmer had stood beside her while a nurse placed Louisa against her chest.
“I never saw another baby,” Joanna said.
The operating-room chart showed that Joanna had been sedated again after asking why she heard two newborns crying.
Dr. Saye entered the additional medication order.
Twin B was moved to a private nursery controlled by Mercer Family Services.
Walter signed the transfer.
Mark and Laura Grant had suffered their own loss that night. Their premature daughter died shortly after delivery in another section of the hospital.
A Mercer social worker approached them before dawn.
She said an abandoned infant needed immediate placement and that a confidential adoption could be completed after the hospital emergency ended.
The Grants were grieving.
They signed temporary foster papers.
Three weeks later, Dr. Saye delivered a birth certificate naming them as Sophie’s parents.
They believed the adoption was legal.
Walter later turned that belief into leverage.
DNA testing confirmed Sophie and Louisa were identical twins.
Joanna was their biological mother.
Elmer was not their biological father.
The result established history.
It did not determine where Sophie should sleep the following night.
Helen Brooks told every attorney:
“A genetic test is not a custody order.”
Joanna appreciated the statement even while part of her wanted to drive to Amy Grant’s house and count Sophie’s fingers herself.
Miriam requested a private meeting.
Joanna refused private conversation again.
“What did you know?” she asked with Rachel and independent counsel present.
“I knew two embryos had implanted,” Miriam said.
“That is not what I asked.”
“I received an anonymous note after Louisa’s birth saying a second child survived.”
“When?”
“Six months later.”
“You searched?”
“Yes.”
“Did you find the Grants?”
“Not by name. Walter’s records used numbers.”
“Did you tell me?”
“No.”
Miriam believed revealing an uncertain second child would make Joanna confront Walter before the pension investigation was ready.
She also feared Elmer might reject Louisa if he learned about the donor material.
“I wanted proof,” Miriam said.
“You wanted control over the moment I learned.”
“Yes.”
The admission had become familiar enough to feel rehearsed.
Joanna did not absolve her because she admitted it cleanly.
The transfer schedule showed that Sophie was not the only infant moved through Mercer Family Services. Nine children had entered “emergency family placement” during their first year.
Some may have been legitimate foster arrangements.
Others required investigation.
The final page contained a donor number linked to Joanna’s embryos.
DONOR 4417—MEDICAL CONTACT ACTIVE.
Walter had told everyone the donor was legally anonymous. Dr. Saye’s private system had continued monitoring him.
Rachel traced the number to a cardiology practice in Philadelphia.
The physician there, Dr. Nathan Rowe, was fifty-two and had no knowledge that two children had been born using his stored donation.
He had contributed genetic material during medical school under a program promising anonymous fertility treatment.
He asked only one question after receiving legal notice.
“Are the children healthy?”
Louisa and Sophie both carried a minor cardiac marker that might require monitoring later.
Nathan supplied his medical history.
He requested no fatherhood.
Walter sent Joanna another message from a hidden account.
If Rowe appears in court, Louisa’s trust dies. Blood created the clause. Blood will destroy it.
Helen Brooks read the threat and closed the file.
“Miriam’s intent matters more than Walter’s interpretation.”
The trust hearing would decide that.
Meanwhile, fire investigators found Dr. Saye’s escape route beneath the clinic.
It connected to Mercer Development’s old residential program.
The same tunnel system Caroline used.
