Chapter 10 - THE PLAN TO BECOME NECESSARY ON PAPER

The central plan was not to kidnap my children.

Aurelia did not intend to take them abroad.

She did not intend to steal a trust.

She had not forged Rosalie’s will.

What she wanted was something more plausible.

Permanent practical authority.

For twelve weeks after Rosalie died, Aurelia had been documenting every task she performed.

2:10 a.m. — Clara bottle, A.V.

6:45 — Elliot breakfast refusal, A.V. resolved.

8:00 — school drop-off, A.V.

11:30 — pediatrician call, A.V.

5:00 — Stefano business dinner.

7:00 — Elliot homework, A.V.

Some entries were true.

Then context disappeared.

The 2:10 bottle happened because I had fed Clara at 11:00 and 4:00.

The business dinner ended at 6:15.

A nanny handled homework most nights.

The log was not fabricated.

It was curated.

Then photographs.

Aurelia with Clara.

Aurelia at school.

Aurelia at therapy waiting room.

Aurelia at the estate breakfast table.

Again:

Real.

Then draft letter to me.

Stefano,

No one is asking you to surrender your children. We are asking you to formalize the arrangement already keeping them stable.

Already.

That was the strategy.

Create routine.

Name routine.

Then present formalization as merely recognizing reality.

Why?

Aurelia believed I would eventually move the children away from the estate.

She was right.

Rosalie and I had planned to relocate after Clara turned six months.

A smaller house near Elliot’s school.

Less staff.

Less family traffic.

Aurelia knew.

She hated it.

She believed taking the children away from the Vellari estate after their mother died would “sever continuity.”

I believed the estate was full of grief and adults who treated family identity like a job description.

Then the video call with Laurel.

Aurelia wanted one more thing.

Elliot saying:

“I want Aunt Aurelia in charge here.”

Not legally decisive.

Emotionally powerful.

Useful in mediation.

Useful against me.

Useful if she later sought a court-ordered caregiving role under whatever theory her lawyers could support.

Elliot refused.

So she put him in the SUV.

With Clara.

In 104-degree cabin heat.

And told him:

“Bake in there until you obey!”

The car was not the plan.

It was what happened when the plan met a child who said no.
