Chapter 2 - THE CAR WAS ALREADY HOT

The vehicle data mattered.

A modern luxury SUV records more than most owners realize.

Door openings.

Engine state.

Cabin temperature alerts.

Remote-lock actions.

Climate status.

Police obtained the data with consent from the vehicle account and later through formal process.

The timeline corrected the story relatives had already started exaggerating.

The children had not been locked in the SUV for twenty minutes.

Not ten.

Not even five.

Aurelia had loaded Clara into the car at 2:08 p.m.

The rear passenger door remained open.

Elliot climbed in at 2:10.

The vehicle had been sitting in direct sun for nearly forty minutes before that.

Cabin temperature at 2:10:

104°F.

Aurelia did not start the engine.

Why?

She later said they were “leaving in a moment.”

For roughly four minutes, she stood beside the open rear door arguing with Elliot while he sat in the hot interior.

At 2:14, she slammed the door.

Pressed lock.

The vehicle issued a cabin-temperature warning to the key-linked phone.

She dismissed it.

Approximately forty seconds later, I saw Elliot.

By 2:15, I had the door open.

That helped medically.

It did not help Aurelia morally.

The children had been exposed to a dangerously hot interior before the lock because she made them sit while she argued.

The deliberate lock turned bad judgment into coercion.

Elliot had also been outside at a youth tennis lesson earlier that afternoon.

He arrived home already mildly dehydrated.

That contributed to his near-collapse.

Again:

Accuracy.

Aurelia had not cooked him for half an hour.

She had still knowingly used an overheated car as punishment.

Then the cabin alert.

Detective Erin Lowe asked her:

“Did you see this warning?”

Aurelia said yes.

“What did you think?”

“That I was standing beside the vehicle.”

“Were the children free to exit?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Elliot was throwing a tantrum.”

“Was Clara?”

Silence.

There.

Clara was four months old.

May you like

She could not obey or disobey anything.

Whatever lesson Aurelia claimed to teach Elliot, my infant daughter was simply collateral.
