Chapter 22 - ROSALIE’S VOICE

I found one old voicemail.
Not secret evidence.
My own phone backup.
Rosalie, six months before Clara was born.
“Your sister rearranged Elliot’s summer schedule again.”
Then laughter.
“She loves him. I know. But Stefano, love doesn’t give people administrative rights.”
I sat in my office and listened three times.
Then stopped.
I did not give it to prosecutors.
Not relevant enough.
No one needed to turn Rosalie into a dead witness.
I played it once for my therapist.
Then deleted the shortcut from my phone.
The backup remained.
Memory did not need to become ammunition.
That night Elliot asked:
“Did Mom like Aunt Aurelia?”
“Yes.”
“Even if they fight?”
“Yes.”
“Can I like her?”
“Yes.”
“Can I be mad?”
“Yes.”
“Same time?”
“Yes.”
He considered.
May you like
“That’s annoying.”
Correct.
