Dr. Flynn gave him an assignment.
During one supervised family afternoon, Elliot was not allowed to help with Clara unless an adult asked.
He hated it.
Clara fussed.
He stood halfway out of his chair.
Maria picked her up.
Elliot sat.
Bottle time.
He reached.
Maria handled it.
Clara dropped a toy.
He stared at it.
I picked it up.
By lunch, he was angry.
“You’re doing everything.”
“Yes.”
“She’s my sister.”
“Yes.”
“I help.”
“You can. But you don’t have to be first.”
He looked like he might cry.
Then Clara smiled at him.
He made a ridiculous face.
She laughed.
No bottle.
No safety check.
No vigilance.
Just brother.
Elliot laughed too.

“I like that job.”
“What job?”
“Making her laugh.”
