Chapter 16 - MARTIN STEPS ASIDEMartin requested permission to resign as executor.
I initially wanted him removed.
Then realized resignation was the cleanest answer.
He had not altered the will.
He had not helped Richard create the page.
But he had made himself a witness.
He knew about Richard’s pressure.
He had examined the document before filing.
He had delayed transferring it to independent custody.
His neutrality had become complicated.
The probate court appointed a neutral temporary administrator for contested matters.
Martin remained available as witness and counsel regarding earlier estate planning where appropriate, subject to conflict rules.
He apologized to me privately.
“I thought I could manage Richard.”
I almost laughed.
“Everybody thinks that.”
“I should have called your counsel immediately.”
“Yes.”
“I was trying to keep the estate from becoming a family war.”
I looked at my crutches.
“Richard stepped on my amputation at the funeral.”
Martin closed his eyes.
“Point taken.”
