Chapter 12 - Marian’s storage unit

Marian left a storage unit I had ignored after her death.
Mostly furniture.
Old medical books.
Christmas decorations.
Naomi and I went with Marcus.
No dramatic hidden vault.
We opened boxes for six hours.
Tax returns.
Uniforms.
Old VHS tapes.
A broken lamp.
Then a plastic tote labeled:
Claire
Inside:
Baby clothes.
A yellow blanket.
Medical receipts.
A photograph of me around six months old.
And a sealed manila envelope.
My name written in Marian’s handwriting.
I sat on the concrete floor.
Marcus said:
“Do you want counsel present?”
“No.”
Then reconsidered.
“Yes.”
We left it sealed.
Elena came.
We documented opening.
Inside:
A St. Catherine’s employee badge belonging to Marian.
An old hospital parking receipt dated the morning Hannah disappeared.
A newspaper clipping about Baby Girl Ashford.
And a letter.
Not from Marian.
From someone named:
Deborah Lane.
The first line:
Marian, I need you to do what I cannot.
We stopped.
May you like
Elena photographed every page.
Then called police.
