Chapter 14 - My anger at a dead woman

For three days I hated Marian.

Completely.

Then hated myself for hating her.

This was the woman who held me through nightmares.

Worked overtime for braces.

Sat beside me during appendicitis.

Taught me to drive.

Paid community-college tuition.

Loved me.

Also maybe helped conceal my kidnapping.

Both.

I threw a mug at Naomi’s wall.

It broke.

Her mug.

I apologized.

Then cried harder.

Naomi said:

“You don’t have to decide what Marian was today.”

I wanted a category.

Mother.

Kidnapper.

Protector.

Accomplice.

Liar.
