Chapter 24 - Victoria learns Claire

Victoria kept calling me Hannah accidentally.
The first month.
Then stopped.
She asked about my childhood.
Not interrogation.
Questions.
Favorite teacher.
First job.
Marian.
She did not flinch at Marian’s name after a while.
That mattered.
One afternoon she asked:
“Was she good to you?”
“Yes.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Thank God.”
I stared.
“You can say that?”
“What else should I want?”
That was the moment I first saw her as my mother without feeling trapped by the word.
Not because she hated Marian.
Because she could be grateful I had been loved even by someone who helped keep me from her.
Grief without ownership.

Hard.
