Chapter 19 - Jonathan never knew

Ethan’s father, Jonathan Ashford, died four years before my wedding.
Pancreatic cancer.
He never learned I was alive.
That became Victoria’s hardest grief after finding me.
She said:
“He waited.”
I did not know what to say.
She showed me one photograph.
Jonathan sitting beside a birthday cake with three candles.
No child.
Every year until Hannah would have turned eighteen, they bought a small cake.
Not a public ritual.
Just them.
At three.
At ten.
At sixteen.
Victoria stopped after Jonathan died.
I asked:
“What did you do with them?”
“Threw them away after.”
Something about that broke me.
I cried for a father I had never known.

Then felt guilty because Marian had been there for every one of my actual birthdays.
Grief again refused categories.
