Chapter 25 - Ethan’s place in all of it

People treated Ethan as an accessory to my identity story.

He hated that.

He had lost a wedding too.

Lost the uncomplicated version of his family.

Learned his mother had privately investigated the woman he loved.

Watched Victoria’s missing daughter become his fiancée.

Again:

No blood relation.

But socially bizarre enough that strangers made jokes.

He stopped reading comments.

Smart.

He also confronted Victoria.

Not about Hannah.

About Claire.

“You made me choose between peace with you and protecting her.”

Victoria said:

“I know.”

“I kept choosing peace.”

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

That mattered more than defending me after the sleeve tore.

Protection after public cruelty is easier than opposing quiet cruelty before.

We both learned that.
