Chapter 20 - Ethan and I decide what our wedding meant

Three months after the canceled ceremony, Ethan asked:
“Do you still want to marry me?”
Not:
When.
Not:
Can we reschedule.
Do you still want to?
I answered:
“Yes.”
Then:
“I don’t want another wedding.”
He smiled.
“Thank God.”
I laughed.
First easy laugh in months.
We decided to wait.
Not because of scandal.
Because I needed my relationship with Victoria to exist separately from my relationship with Ethan.
I did not want marriage to become a shortcut forcing intimacy with a newly discovered biological family.
That was something Victoria understood surprisingly well.
She said:

“You don’t owe me daughterhood because you love Ethan.”
Best sentence she gave me that year.
