Chapter 1 - The Phone Beneath the Blanket
An abused wife reveals her husband’s secret recordings from a hospital bed, but his terror deepens when she hints that the visible evidence is only the beginning.
Dr. Ethan Reed lowered the white blanket from Emily Mercer’s shoulder and went completely still.
The private room at St. Catherine’s Hospital glowed with warm bedside lamps, but the fluorescent light from the corridor made every bruise look colder. Purple marks spread across Emily’s neck, arms, and shoulders. Her blonde hair lay tangled against the pillow. An IV band circled her wrist. Her eyes were wet, exhausted, and terrified.
Grant Mercer stood beside the bed in a black suit, one hand hidden beneath the blanket, squeezing Emily’s wrist hard enough to make her breath catch.
He smiled at the doctor.
“She slipped in the shower. She bruises very easily.”
Emily’s eyes flicked toward Dr. Reed.
Then toward the phone hidden beneath the blanket.
Grant bent over her suddenly, blocking the doctor’s view. His false concern vanished. His jaw clenched inches from her face.
“Say it exactly the way we practiced.”
Dr. Reed moved instantly.
He grabbed Grant’s shoulder, pulled him away from the bed, and planted himself between them.
“Step away from her. Those injuries did not come from a fall.”
The two officers at the door straightened.
Grant recoiled, outraged.
Then Emily’s trembling hand rose from beneath the blanket.
Her black smartphone glowed in her grip.
On the screen, a silent, blurred recording showed Grant inside their home, gripping her face and threatening her.
Grant froze.
Emily looked directly at him through pain.
“You recorded everything because you enjoyed watching me beg.”
Grant lunged.
An officer blocked him against the bedrail while the second shut the door.
Emily swiped once.
More blurred thumbnails appeared.
Folders.
Files.
Things Grant recognized.
His face collapsed into dread.
Emily lowered the phone to her chest and whispered:
May you like
“And that wasn’t the only camera.”
