Chapter 8 - Dr. Reed Understands the Pattern

Dr. Reed had been trained to recognize injuries.
But standing beside Emily’s hospital bed, he realized he was looking at more than injuries.
He was looking at a system.
Grant’s smooth explanation.
Emily’s terrified silence.
The hidden grip beneath the blanket.
The threat in her ear.
The sudden panic at the phone.
The desperate reach for the device.
The pattern was visible now.
Not complete.
Not legally finished.
But visible.
He placed himself slightly closer to Emily’s shoulder, blocking any sudden path from Grant to the bed.
“Emily,” he said calmly, “keep breathing slowly.”
She nodded.
The monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Grant’s eyes moved to it, then away.
He hated every machine that made Emily’s reality measurable.
The injuries.
The vitals.
The timestamps.
The footage.
All the things he could not charm.
Emily’s phone buzzed once in her hand.
Grant flinched.
The sound was tiny.
His reaction was enormous.
The officers noticed.
Emily noticed too.
Her smile faded, replaced by cold concentration.
That buzz meant something had been backed up, sent, triggered, or received.
The story would not reveal which.

Grant only knew enough to fear all of them.
