Chapter 9 - Not the Only Camera

Grant stopped struggling.
That was when he looked most afraid.
His rage had been easier to read.
His panic now was quieter, uglier, deeper.
He stared at Emily as if the floor had vanished beneath him.
She held the phone against her chest with both hands.
The screen dimmed slightly, but the files were still there.
Blurred.
Unopened.
Waiting.
Dr. Reed and the officers exchanged a severe look.
No one said arrest.
No one revealed what the other recordings contained.
No one named Grant’s hidden financial crimes.
No one explained what would happen next.
Emily looked at Grant.
Her eyes overflowed with pain, but her voice came out steady.
“And that wasn’t the only camera.”
Grant’s lips parted.
Nothing came.
For a man who had always known what to say, silence looked like collapse.
Emily saw his mind moving.
Which camera?
Where?
When?
Who had it?
How many files?
Who else knew?
That was the first true consequence.
Not punishment.
Uncertainty.
Grant had lived by making Emily uncertain.

Now she handed the feeling back to him.
