Chapter 4 - The Officers Close the Door

The door clicked shut.

Grant heard it.

Emily heard it.

The sound changed the room.

For Grant, it meant containment.

For Emily, it meant no hallway escape for his performance.

The second officer stood in front of the door, posture firm and alert. He did not reach for Grant. He did not announce anything final. He simply watched.

That was enough.

Grant’s anger searched for a smaller target.

He turned on Dr. Reed.

“You had no right to bring police into a private medical matter.”

Dr. Reed’s jaw tightened.

“This stopped being private when she arrived with injuries that did not match your explanation.”

Grant’s eyes widened with fury.

“My wife is under stress.”

Emily’s voice came softly from the bed.

“Stop calling me your wife like it protects you.”

The room went still.

Grant looked at her as if she had struck him.

She had never said it like that before.

Not with witnesses.

Not with the phone glowing in her hand.

Not while he was the one trapped near the bedrail.

Dr. Reed looked down at Emily’s bruised wrist.

Then at Grant.

The officer closest to Grant followed the doctor’s gaze.

Grant saw it and shoved his hands into his pockets.

Too late.

Everyone had seen enough.

Not everything.

But enough.
