Chapter 3 - Grant’s Mask Falls

Grant tried concern again.
It came too late.
His mouth softened, but his eyes were still full of fury. His hands shook at his sides. His wedding ring caught the bedside lamp as he lifted both palms in a performance of innocence.
“Emily, sweetheart, you’re confused.”
Dr. Reed’s expression sharpened.
Emily almost laughed.
Sweetheart.
The word sounded obscene in his mouth now.
He used it for audiences.
Doctors.
Neighbors.
Investors.
Police officers standing near doors.
Never when no one was watching.
Her thumb hovered over the screen.
Grant noticed.
His false softness cracked.
“Don’t.”
One word.
Not pleaded.
Commanded.
The officer beside him stepped closer.
Grant’s shoes scraped against the floor as he shifted his weight, ready to move again if he saw a chance.
Emily saw that too.
She raised the phone higher.
Her arm trembled violently. Pain cut through her shoulder and down her wrist, but she did not lower it.
Dr. Reed moved beside the bed, shielding her without blocking the screen.
“Emily,” he said quietly, “you are safe in this room.”
She wanted to believe him.
But safety was not a room.
Safety was proof that could survive after the room changed.
Her eyes stayed on Grant.
“You always thought fear erased memory.”
Grant’s face drained.
He knew what that meant.
The recording on the screen was not the only one.

The visible evidence was only the doorway.
