Chapter 2 - The Doctor Who Stopped Believing

Dr. Reed had heard too many explanations that arrived before questions.
A fall.
A stumble.
A bad night.
A wife who bruised easily.
A husband who spoke too smoothly.
Grant’s story had been perfect in the way rehearsed lies were perfect.
Too clean.
Too ready.
Too focused on controlling the room before anyone else could breathe.
Dr. Reed looked at Emily again. She was not only injured. She was listening for permission to survive. That realization hardened his expression.
Grant adjusted his cuff, trying to restore the old shape of himself.
“You’re making a mistake, Doctor.”
Dr. Reed did not move.
“No. You made one when you thought I would ignore my patient.”
Emily’s fingers tightened around the phone.
The first officer remained close to Grant, one arm raised between him and the bed. The second officer stood near the closed door, hand near his radio, eyes locked on Grant’s movement.
Grant looked from the officers to the doctor, then to Emily.
“You don’t know what she’s like.”
Emily’s lips trembled.
For years, that sentence had followed her into every room.
You don’t know what she’s like.
Too emotional.
Too unstable.
Too dramatic.
Too fragile.
Tonight, her body had been turned into evidence before her voice was trusted.
But the phone in her hand changed that.
Dr. Reed glanced at the screen.
The recording remained visible only in fragments, non-graphic and silent. It did not need sound to be understood.
Grant’s face twisted.
“Turn that off.”
Emily looked at him.
May you like
For the first time, she did not obey.
