Chapter 5 - The Swipe

Emily swiped once.

Not dramatically.

Not fast.

Just one movement of her thumb across the cracked glow of the phone.

Grant’s entire body reacted.

His shoulders jerked. His mouth opened. Sweat appeared along his hairline.

The screen changed.

Several blurred video thumbnails appeared. Then financial folders. Then more files without readable writing.

No one in the room could read them.

But Grant could recognize them.

His fear arrived before explanation.

Dr. Reed saw it.

The officers saw it.

Emily saw it most clearly of all.

Grant whispered, “Where did you get those?”

His voice no longer sounded like a husband.

It sounded like a man watching locked doors open inside his own life.

Emily rested the phone against her chest, protecting it with both hands.

“You gave me the first camera.”

Grant’s face twitched.

The officers exchanged a glance.

Dr. Reed did not ask what she meant.

Not yet.

The complete archive would not be revealed tonight. Grant’s hidden financial crimes would not be named. No one would explain how many recordings existed or where they were stored.

That was what made the silence unbearable.

Grant had built his power on information only he possessed.

Now Emily had information too.

And he did not know how much.
