Chapter 7 - Emily’s Cold Smile

Emily had smiled at Grant thousands of times.

At charity dinners.

At company parties.

At family holidays.

For neighbors.

For cameras.

For survival.

Those smiles had been careful.

Tonight’s was different.

Small.

Painful.

Terrifying.

It spread across her bruised face without warmth, and Grant recoiled as if the expression itself had cut him.

“You think this is funny?” he demanded.

Emily did not answer.

Dr. Reed’s face hardened.

The officer near Grant shifted again, warning him without words.

Emily lowered the phone slightly, just enough to meet Grant’s eyes over the top of it.

Her body hurt.

Her throat hurt.

Her wrist throbbed where his hand had squeezed.

But something inside her had gone still.

Grant understood then that he was not looking at fear anymore.

He was looking at the moment after fear.

The place where obedience dies.

His voice dropped.

“Emily, give me the phone.”

She held it closer.

“No.”

One word.

Grant’s face twisted violently.

He looked toward the door.

Closed.

Toward the doctor.

Unmoved.

Toward the officers.

Ready.

Toward Emily.

Awake.
