Chapter 6 - The Bedrail

Grant’s fingers closed around the metal bedrail.

The same rail he had leaned over minutes earlier while whispering orders into Emily’s ear.

Now he gripped it like it might keep him standing.

The officer beside him placed one firm hand near his arm.

“Step back.”

Grant looked at him with raw hatred.

He did not move.

The officer’s expression did not change.

“Now.”

Grant stepped back.

One inch.

Then another.

Emily watched the motion with a strange ache in her chest. All those years, she had wondered what it would take to make Grant retreat.

Not love.

Not tears.

Not promises.

Not fear.

A uniform.

A witness.

A phone.

Dr. Reed leaned closer to Emily.

“Do you need me to take the device for safekeeping?”

Emily shook her head slowly.

“No.”

Her voice was weak, but the decision was not.

The phone stayed in her hand.

Grant stared at it with absolute dread.

He had recorded her because he enjoyed possession.

He had kept moments as trophies.

But trophies can become evidence when the person inside them survives.

Read Chapter 7 👉 Because Grant’s own recordings had become the thing he could no longer reach.
