Olivia did not tell Diane she planned to fake the theft.
Diane did not instruct Olivia to accuse me.
No secret pact.
No scheme to get my house.
No inheritance plot.
Olivia acted alone.
But she acted with confidence because she knew how our mother would react.
That was the system.
Olivia could create a crisis.
Diane would protect her.
I would be expected to absorb the cost because I was “strong.”
The housewarming broke that system in public.
For the first time, technology did what Dad had spent decades preventing.
It froze the facts before someone translated them.

Olivia hid the envelope herself.
There was no room for Diane to rewrite the basic event.
And instead of changing allegiance to reality, Diane attacked the person whose innocence had just been proven.
Why?
Because my innocence meant Olivia’s guilt.
And Diane had spent thirty years treating those things as incompatible with her role as mother.
If Olivia was wrong, Diane felt she had failed to protect her.
If I was right, Diane felt I was humiliating her other daughter.
The bat was not about ten thousand dollars.
