Chapter 5 - THE ENVELOPEThe envelope contained $4,000 cash and two cashier’s checks totaling $6,000.
All of it belonged to Olivia.
Legally.
No theft.
No insurance claim.
No actual missing money.
She had withdrawn the funds earlier that week from a savings account.
Why carry it to my party?
Her first answer:
“I was going to pay someone Monday.”
Who?
She refused.
Later:
“It was personal.”
Still later:
“It didn’t matter because it was my money.”
Correct.
What mattered was that she hid it, then accused me of stealing it.
Police did not charge her simply for being a liar at a family party.
She had not filed a formal theft report before the footage exposed her.
She had not collected insurance money.
She had not caused me to be arrested.
The law did not exist to prosecute every cruel deception.
That frustrated Ben.
“Then she gets nothing?”
Detective Sloan said:
May you like
“She may face consequences. They may not be criminal.”
That sentence would come back repeatedly during the next year.
