I said:
“No.”
“What?”
“That sentence makes weather responsible.”
She became angry.
Then left.
Three months later she tried again.
“I hid the envelope.”
“Yes.”
“I accused you because I wanted Mom and everyone there to think you were greedy and unstable about money.”
I said nothing.
“I thought I could reveal the envelope later and say I made a mistake.”
“After accusing me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted you embarrassed.”

“Did you think Mom would hurt me?”
“No.”
I believed her.
“Did you know she might explode?”
Olivia cried.
“Yes.”
That was the harder answer.
