She closed her event business after negotiating debts.
Took a salaried job coordinating conferences for a hotel group.
Steady paycheck.
Less glamorous Instagram.
More stable life.
Diane stopped rescuing every bill.
Not because I demanded it.
Because Diane’s financial counselor helped her build a budget.
Olivia paid back part of the $10,000 loan over time.
Diane forgave some.
Her money.
Her choice.
Olivia and I met for coffee once every few months.
Never at first with Lily.
One afternoon Olivia said:
“I hated the new house.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“You had something that looked finished.”
“It was a mortgage.”
“I know.”
“I had boxes everywhere.”
“I know.”
“I was thirty-two and asking Mom for money.”
I said:
“So you called me a thief.”
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
