Chapter 23 - LILY AND BASEBALLAt five, Lily wanted to try T-ball.

I nearly said no.

Not because she was afraid.

I was.

When the coach handed her a plastic practice bat, my scalp tingled where the scar sat beneath my hair.

Lily held it backward.

The coach laughed.

I didn’t.

Ben whispered:

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to leave?”

I watched Lily.

She was grinning.

“No.”

The first practice lasted forty-five minutes.

No flashback swallowed me.

No bat transformed in anyone’s hand.

Lily hit the ball approximately four feet.

Then ran toward third base.

Wrong direction.

Ben laughed so hard he cried.

A bat became sports equipment again.

May you like

Not immediately.

That afternoon helped.
