Chapter 18 - THE MAIN TRUTH ABOUT ANDREWThere had been no hospital mix-up.

That was our first theory.
Wrong.
Evelyn finally came to Pennsylvania with an attorney.
She looked older.
Smaller.
Still had the same sharp blue eyes Mom and I shared.
She cried before saying anything.
Then told us.
Andrew had been privately placed.
Not stolen.
Not swapped.
Placed.
Margaret’s second pregnancy had ended in a late stillbirth.
I knew that.
What I did not know:
Mom experienced severe postpartum depression afterward.
Almost a year later, Robert’s younger cousin, Daniel Harlan, and Daniel’s girlfriend, Rebecca, had a baby they were not prepared to raise.
Both had serious drug problems.
Daniel disappeared during the pregnancy.
Rebecca wanted the baby adopted privately.
Robert’s mother arranged an attorney.
The plan was for Robert and Margaret to adopt him.
Margaret knew they were adopting.
That was not the secret.
The secret was that she believed the adoption had been finalized legally.
It had not.
The attorney handling the case died suddenly before finalization.
Robert’s mother panicked.
Instead of restarting properly, she arranged for hospital paperwork to list Robert and Margaret directly as parents.
False birth record.
Evelyn, then a young nurse trainee, knew the paperwork was wrong.
She was told:
“It will be fixed later.”
It never was.
Margaret raised Andrew believing there had been a lawful adoption completed privately.
Robert believed the same for decades.
Then Dad found the Harlan nursery card.
The DNA test confirmed no biological relationship.
Old court searches found no adoption decree.
Andrew was their son socially.
Functionally.
Legally, the birth certificate had represented something that never actually happened.
That was the secret.

Not that Robert suddenly decided forty-six years of fatherhood vanished.
He discovered the legal origin story was false.
