Chapter 26 - THE TIMER GOES BACK TO THE KITCHENTwo years after the hearing, the old metal timer was returned after evidence retention requirements ended and certified copies remained preserved.

Mom asked for it.

I thought that was a terrible idea.

“Why?”

“It’s mine.”

“It was Dad’s spy camera.”

“It was my kitchen timer first.”

Fair.

The digital module had been removed during evidence processing and returned separately.

Mom did not want the camera.

She wanted the metal shell.

Maria helped clean it.

No polishing.

Scratches stayed.

They put it beside the stove.

The first time Mom used it, she timed banana bread.

I stood there listening to the mechanical ticking.

My chest tightened.

Mom noticed.

“You’re doing that thing.”

“What thing?”

“Making an object more important than it is.”

“I learned from Dad.”

“Your father made everything more important than it was.”

The timer rang.

Mom opened the oven.

The banana bread was raw.

She had set twenty minutes instead of fifty.

We stared.

Then she laughed.

Real memory problem.

Ordinary.

She reset it.

Thirty minutes.

No one used the mistake to petition a court.

That was progress.
