Then Andrew wrote.
Not about money.
Not first.
You told me I was your son and I still tried to make a court tell you that you couldn’t decide anything for yourself.
Mom read that line three times.
Then kept reading.
I was afraid that if Dad’s papers said I wasn’t legally adopted, everything I had been would disappear. Vanessa kept saying Claire would take everything. I let fear turn you into an obstacle.
Mom cried.
Then:
I moved your medication because I thought controlling it would prove you needed me. I told myself it was safety. Sometimes it was. Sometimes I also used your confusion because it helped my case.
There.
The sentence we needed.
Not pure villainy.
Worse in a more human way.
He had sometimes been genuinely afraid she would double-dose.
Then discovered the appearance of confusion benefited him.
And stopped being careful about the difference.
Mom did not answer immediately.
When she did, three weeks later:
I love you. That does not mean I trust you.
