Evelyn explained the missing context.
Dad was frightened.
He believed the false birth record could complicate:
Andrew’s inheritance.
Old insurance designations.
Trust language.
Possibly Andrew’s own children’s records if they relied on lineage definitions.
More importantly, Dad believed Andrew had recently discovered the same truth.
Why?
Andrew had asked unusually specific questions about whether the family trust required descendants to be “issue,” “children,” or named individuals.
He had requested certified copies of his birth certificate.
He had searched Dad’s old files.
Dad believed Andrew was hiding his discovery from Mom.
The night Robert died, Dad confronted him.
His statement toward the camera—
“Margaret… Andrew is not our son”—
was not a moral declaration.
It was an evidentiary message made by a scared man who thought something might happen to the records.
Evelyn said she immediately told him:
“Don’t show her.”
Why?
Because Margaret had suffered a transient ischemic attack three weeks earlier and Evelyn feared Robert would dump forty-six years of legal chaos on her at midnight while she was medically fragile.
Dad turned toward Evelyn.
“You knew?”
She did.
Not every detail.
Enough.
She had known the original adoption paperwork failed.
She had never told Margaret.
For forty-six years.
That was what Mom recognized in court.
