Chapter 6 - THE TIMER DISAPPEARSAfter Dad died, the timer vanished from the kitchen.
I did not notice.
Why would I?
Mom noticed.
She told Andrew:
“Where’s your father’s timer?”
Andrew replied:
“You threw it out.”
She believed him.
Then doubted herself.
Months later, while Maria helped clear a low pantry cabinet, Mom suddenly said:
“Not there.”
Maria asked:
“What?”
“The timer.”
“Which timer?”
“Robert hid it.”
Mom became agitated.
Maria stopped cleaning.
“Tell me.”
Mom remembered Dad once saying:
“If the timer goes missing, look where I keep bad warranties.”
Meaning the garage file cabinet.
Dad kept receipts, expired manuals, and warranties in a green metal drawer because he believed corporations relied on consumers losing paper.
Maria found the timer inside a plastic bag behind an old refrigerator warranty.
No card visible.
No obvious camera.
She almost threw it into a donation box.
Mom stopped her.
