Chapter 11 - MY MISTAKEI made a social-media post.

Not angry at first.

A photograph of Maya by the hotel window.

Caption:

My seven-year-old learned today that a confirmed seat apparently belongs to whoever an airline decides matters more. Thank you to the captain who stopped it.

It spread.

Someone identified the airline.

Then Dalton.

Then Richard Cole.

That I had not intended.

Comments called Dalton racist even though everyone involved was white.

Others called him anti-veteran.

Some called Richard a corrupt billionaire.

None of that was supported.

I deleted the post.

Too late.

Richard’s company began receiving angry messages.

Dalton’s home address appeared in one thread.

I felt sick.

Captain Callahan called.

“You all right?”

“I created a mess.”

“You told what happened.”

“I told part of what happened to millions of people who filled in the rest.”

Silence.

Then:

“That distinction matters.”

I apologized publicly to Richard by name after he agreed.

I did not apologize for describing the seat incident.

May you like

I apologized for allowing assumptions about his role to spread without correction.

Accountability worked both directions.
