Chapter 18 - THE MAIN TRUTH ABOUT “VANCE”Callahan did not remember my face.

That mattered.

People age.

Trauma distorts.

Masks and blood had covered half of us.

He remembered:

The surname on the casualty report.

Vance.

The PJ who refused evacuation until the aircraft commander was loaded.

Years later Callahan requested the names through military channels because he wanted to thank the team.

He wrote letters.

Mine came back undeliverable after I changed addresses during rehabilitation.

He kept the mission summary anyway.

When he saw the challenge coin on seat 2A, he recognized the squadron emblem and JV-style marking.

When he saw my veteran ID, he knew I had served.

He saluted from instinct and respect.

Then the manifest gave him the surname.

Vance.

That was the connection.

Not secret family.

Not hidden inheritance.

Not Rebecca arranging some impossible reunion.

A pilot meeting one of the men who had helped pull him out of a bad place sixteen years earlier.

Callahan said:

“I spent years wanting to tell you thank you.”

I looked at him.

“I don’t remember doing anything special.”

“That doesn’t change what I remember.”

Then:

May you like

“You don’t owe me the memory.”

That sentence stayed with me.
