Chapter 5 - THE BUSINESSMANThe man in the navy suit eventually introduced himself.

Richard Cole.

Fifty-eight.

Founder of a medical-device company.

He had missed a connection after a mechanical delay.

His original first-class seat disappeared when the airline rebooked him on our flight.

He approached me cautiously.

“May I?”

I gestured to the aisle.

He stayed standing.

“I want to be clear. I asked the lounge agent whether they could restore my original cabin. I did not ask them to remove you.”

“I believe you.”

His shoulders lowered.

“Thank you.”

“Did Dalton tell you whose seat he was taking?”

“No. He said he’d ‘found a solution.’”

Maya looked up.

Richard said:

“I’m sorry, young lady.”

She asked:

“Were you going to sit in my seat?”

Children.

Richard said:

“I think they planned to put me in your dad’s seat.”

“Then who was taking mine?”

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

May you like

Neither did I.

That question became important later.
