Chapter 14 - WHAT MAYA KNEW ABOUT THE WARAlmost nothing.

Rebecca and I had agreed.
No heroic mythology.
No graphic stories.
Maya knew:
Daddy served in the Air Force.
Daddy helped rescue people.
Daddy hurt his leg.
Daddy sometimes had nightmares.
That was enough.
When I told her Captain Callahan might know me from the military, she asked:
“Did you save him?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
“You forgot?”
“Some parts.”
“How can you forget saving somebody?”
I thought.
May you like
“Because sometimes your brain remembers the scary part instead of the story.”
She accepted that faster than adults usually did.
