Chapter 1 - The Call in the BoardroomAdam Mercer’s phone vibrated during the most important meeting of his career.

Twelve executives sat around the polished table on the forty-second floor of Mercer Dynamics’ Denver headquarters. Beyond the glass walls, storm clouds pressed against the mountains while investors waited for Adam to approve a merger worth nearly two billion dollars.
Grant Caldwell’s chair was empty.
The chief financial officer had sent a brief message claiming his car had broken down.
Adam was about to postpone the vote when he saw the caller’s name.
Mrs. Alvarez.
His elderly neighbor never contacted him during business hours.
He answered.
Wind and sirens filled the line.
“Mr. Mercer, your daughter is in the driveway. There’s blood on her pajamas.”
Adam stopped breathing.
Mrs. Alvarez knelt beside eight-year-old Lily beneath the open front door of the Mercer home. A blanket covered the child’s shoulders. Her pale pajamas were streaked with red, and her hands shook around the phone.
“Lily?”
“Daddy?”
Adam pushed back from the boardroom table.
“Are you hurt?”
Lily began crying.
“Mommy said everyone would believe you did it.”
The investors exchanged startled looks.
Adam’s panic sharpened into cold precision.
“Mrs. Alvarez, call 911. Put me on speaker.”
“Already called. Paramedics are coming.”
Adam turned toward the executives.
“No one leaves this room.”
Board chairman Warren Sloan rose angrily.
“You do not have the authority to detain us.”
“The police will decide that.”
Adam connected the call to the conference system. Every executive heard Lily struggling to breathe and Mrs. Alvarez reassuring her.
“What happened inside the house?” Adam asked.
Lily whispered, “Mommy was yelling at Uncle Grant.”
Adam looked at Grant’s empty chair.
The Mercer front door hung open. A shattered lamp lay inside the living room. Blood marked the hallway wall. Melissa’s phone rested on the kitchen floor.
Melissa herself was gone.
So were the family passports and Adam’s black leather briefcase.
Detective Gabriel Ramos arrived with the first police unit. He entered the damaged house while paramedics examined Lily in the driveway.
The child’s blood pressure was elevated, but she had only a shallow cut near her hairline. Most of the blood on her pajamas did not appear to be hers.
Ramos found a handwritten note beneath the broken lamp.
Adam attacked me when I confronted him about the money. He threatened Lily. If I disappear, my husband did it.
The signature resembled Melissa’s.
Ramos photographed it.
“Melissa left a note blaming you.”
Adam stood motionless at the head of the boardroom table.
“I’ve been inside this room since seven thirty this morning.”
“That gives you an alibi for today,” Ramos replied through the speaker. “It does not explain why your wife expected something to happen.”
Adam looked at the presentation remote beside his hand.
Six months earlier, after confidential merger files disappeared, he installed a private encrypted archive. The system collected backups from Mercer Dynamics and his home security network.
Melissa hated the hidden cameras.
Three days earlier, she told him they had all stopped working.
Adam picked up the remote.
“Open the archive. Play everything.”
The boardroom display awakened.
A timestamp appeared from the Mercer kitchen twelve hours earlier.
Melissa entered wearing a gray sweater. Grant followed her.
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her.
Several executives gasped.
Grant placed an insurance folder on the counter. Melissa opened it, scanned the documents, and signed the final page.
Then Lily entered the kitchen.
The child stared at them.
Melissa spun toward her with explosive rage.
Grant reached for the camera-control cabinet.
The footage vanished.
Adam gripped the remote until his knuckles whitened.
Detective Ramos watched the same playback from the wrecked living room.
The case was no longer simply about a missing wife accusing her husband.
It involved Grant, a secret insurance policy, disabled cameras, and a child who had witnessed something neither adult expected her to see.
Then one of the boardroom executives received a message.
His phone displayed a photograph of Melissa bound to a chair.
Beneath it were five words:
May you like
Approve the merger or she dies.
👉 The first restored footage exposed Melissa’s affair with Grant, but the hostage photograph suggested someone else had taken control of their plan.
