Chapter 5 - The Briefcase Without EvidenceThe missing briefcase was found before midnight.

A highway patrol officer discovered it beside an underpass twelve miles from the Mercer home. The locks had been forced, the lining cut open, and every document removed.
Grant’s fingerprints covered the handle.
Melissa’s blood marked one corner.
Inside the hidden lining was a tracker that had stopped transmitting near an abandoned executive hotel outside Denver.
Police searched the hotel.
Room 614 contained rope fibers, an empty first-aid kit, and a torn piece of Melissa’s gray sweater.
No people remained.
The room had been booked using a Mercer Dynamics corporate account authorized by Warren Sloan.
Warren claimed the account was compromised.
His brother Malcolm remained unreachable.
Grant’s phone was off.
The red folder from the hallway vent remained missing.
Adam returned to Lily’s hospital room.
She had refused to sleep until he arrived.
“Is Mommy bad?” she asked.
Adam sat beside her.
“She made some harmful choices.”
“Did she make the blood?”
“Yes.”
“Because Grant told her?”
“I think she wanted you to get outside safely.”
Lily looked toward the rain.
“Mommy said you would open the wrong box first.”
“What box?”
“She said grown-ups always open the scary thing before the quiet thing.”
Adam remembered the briefcase’s cut lining.
The obvious evidence had been removed.
The real evidence might be somewhere ordinary.
Lily described Melissa placing something inside the kitchen recipe cabinet the night before.
Police found a thin envelope behind a children’s cookbook.
It contained no financial records.
Only photographs.
Grant meeting Malcolm Sloan.
Warren entering the executive hotel.
Melissa speaking with Mrs. Alvarez in the driveway two weeks earlier.
Adam looked toward the final image.
Mrs. Alvarez handed Melissa a small red folder.
The neighbor had lied.
Ramos questioned her at the hospital.
Mrs. Alvarez admitted Melissa approached her after noticing Grant following Lily from school. She asked Mrs. Alvarez to install the exterior camera and watch the house whenever Adam was downtown.
“She told me not to tell you,” Mrs. Alvarez said.
“Why?”
“She believed someone inside your company monitored your calls.”
“Did she give you the red folder?”
“She gave it to me for safekeeping.”
“Where is it?”
Mrs. Alvarez hesitated.
“I delivered it this afternoon.”
“To whom?”
“A federal investigator.”
Ramos’s expression changed.
“What name?”
“Agent Howard Bell.”
No federal agent by that name had been assigned to the case.
The man showed credentials, knew details about the insurance transfers, and claimed Melissa had arranged the delivery.
Mrs. Alvarez gave him the folder twenty minutes before discovering Lily in the driveway.
“He was waiting for it,” Adam said.
Mrs. Alvarez covered her mouth.
The false agent’s vehicle appeared on her exterior camera.
It was a government-style sedan with obscured plates.
The driver’s face became visible as he turned.
Detective Ramos recognized him.
“Evan Price.”
Price had been Ramos’s partner in financial crimes before resigning two years earlier.
He left after an internal investigation into leaked warrants.
His current employer was Sloan Risk Management.
Warren’s private security company.
The red folder was now in Sloan hands.
Ramos opened a national alert for Price.
Adam examined Melissa’s photographs again.
One image showed Warren entering the hotel with a woman who resembled the false paramedic.
On the back, Melissa had written:
EVELYN PRICE—EVAN’S SISTER. GRANT’S REAL WIFE.
Grant was legally married.
Not to Melissa.
