Chapter 4 - The False ParamedicHospital security intercepted the woman before she reached Lily’s room.
She abandoned the transfer clipboard and ran toward a service staircase. Officers found the paramedic jacket on the next floor.
The woman escaped wearing ordinary clothes beneath it.
Cameras captured only part of her face.
Lily recognized her.
“She came to our house.”
“When?” Ramos asked.
“Before Mommy broke the lamp.”
The woman introduced herself as Grant’s sister, but Lily had heard Melissa call her Evelyn.
Adam knew no Evelyn connected to Grant.
The forged transfer order originated from Mercer Dynamics’ employee-benefits server. Someone inside the company used Adam’s archived signature and Lily’s insurance details.
The access credentials belonged to board secretary Diane Roth.
Diane sat inside the executive meeting insisting she had never opened the file.
Ramos seized her laptop.
The login had occurred from another machine using a cloned authentication token.
Every apparent culprit had an alibi.
Every system had been duplicated.
Adam connected Melissa’s micro-storage key to an isolated computer.
It opened a directory titled BLACKGLASS.
Most files remained encrypted.
One video played automatically.
Melissa sat inside Adam’s home office with the missing briefcase on the desk.
Grant stood beside her.
“You said the policy would only freeze his shares,” she said.
“It will.”
“What happens after the merger?”
“Adam has an accident.”
Melissa moved away from him.
“You promised Lily would not be involved.”
“She became involved when she saw us.”
Grant opened the insurance folder.
“Sign the beneficiary confirmation.”
Melissa refused.
Grant played an audio recording of Lily’s voice asking for her mother.
The recording had been taken outside the child’s school.
Melissa signed.
Adam watched in silence.
She had betrayed him before the threat became explicit. She had also tried to reverse the damage afterward.
Both things were true.
The footage continued.
Grant asked for the briefcase combination.
Melissa gave him a false number.
After he left the room, she opened the case herself and removed a red document folder. She hid it beneath the hallway floor vent.
The briefcase Grant stole did not contain the original evidence.
Melissa had left it inside the house.
Ramos returned with a warrant and opened the vent.
The folder was gone.
Dust showed it had been removed recently.
Only four people entered the house after police sealed it: Ramos, two forensic officers, and Mrs. Alvarez.
Adam looked toward his neighbor.
Mrs. Alvarez stared at the empty vent.
“I did not take it.”
Ramos reviewed body-camera footage.
Mrs. Alvarez had entered briefly to retrieve Lily’s winter coat after receiving permission from an officer.
She passed the hallway vent.
Her body blocked the camera for six seconds.
“Why didn’t you tell us Melissa had hidden something?” Adam asked.
“I didn’t know.”
“Your camera recorded the SUV. You arrived before the paramedics. You were inside my house.”
Mrs. Alvarez’s eyes filled with anger.
“I found your daughter alone and called you. Do not turn me into one of them because your family is lying.”
Her indignation appeared genuine.
Then her phone rang.
She refused the call.
Ramos saw the name.
MELISSA.
Everyone froze.
Mrs. Alvarez answered on speaker.
Static filled the room.
Melissa whispered, “Do not let Adam open the red folder.”
“Where are you?” Adam asked.
His wife gasped.
“You are there?”
“Yes.”
“They made Lily call you?”
“She called me herself.”
Melissa began crying.
“Adam, the footage from the kitchen is not the worst thing in the archive.”
The connection started failing.
“What is in the red folder?”
“Proof that Grant did not choose our house by accident.”
A male voice shouted in the background.
The call ended.
Mrs. Alvarez looked toward Adam.
“I have never spoken to her since finding Lily.”
Her phone log showed no previous incoming calls from Melissa’s number.
Someone had routed the call through her device.
Then Ramos found a small transmitter attached beneath Mrs. Alvarez’s phone case.
