Chapter 10 - The Tunnel Beneath DenverEvan Price regained consciousness in the hospital.

He had a head injury and fragments of memory from the shelter.

Melissa contacted him after discovering Grant’s insurance operation. Together, they built the encrypted separation inside Adam’s archive.

Warren provided corporate access.

Evan believed the chairman was helping expose his brother Malcolm.

The plan for the driveway was supposed to be controlled.

Melissa would create a minor cut on her own hand, place blood on Lily’s pajamas, leave the accusation, and disappear for less than one hour.

Mrs. Alvarez would call Adam.

Adam would activate the archive.

Grant’s communications with Northstar would become visible.

No one expected Grant to arrive early.

He discovered Melissa filming the kitchen confession and seized control of the operation.

“Why involve Lily at all?” Adam asked.

Evan looked ashamed.

“Melissa said Grant monitored every adult. He ignored the child.”

“That made my daughter useful?”

“That made her the only person who could carry the micro-key without being searched.”

Adam turned away.

Everyone had found a reason to place danger near Lily.

Even the people claiming to protect her.

Evan described the emergency tunnel beneath Mercer headquarters. It connected the shelter to an underground delivery station two blocks away.

Police found Grant’s discarded coat and Melissa’s broken shoe near the exit.

A traffic camera captured them entering a white van.

Melissa was walking without visible restraint.

Grant held no obvious weapon.

That image would allow his attorneys to argue she left voluntarily.

The van belonged to an insurance document company operated by Evelyn Caldwell.

Its tracker stopped near the South Platte River.

Ramos searched the riverfront.

They found Melissa’s passport, a bloodstained scarf, and her wedding ring arranged beside the water.

Another staged disappearance.

Grant intended to make it appear Melissa had died after fleeing Adam.

The handwritten accusation would become her final statement.

Adam returned to Lily.

She watched the television without seeing it.

“Did Mommy leave because of me?”

“No.”

“She told me to run outside.”

“She wanted Mrs. Alvarez to find you.”

“Then why didn’t she come too?”

Adam could not provide a simple answer.

Melissa may have been protecting Lily.

She may also have believed the controlled deception was justified.

Both could coexist.

Lily remembered something else.

Before Grant disabled the cameras, Melissa whispered a number while hugging her.

“Fourteen twenty-seven.”

Adam recognized it as a storage locker in the executive parking garage.

Police opened locker 1427.

Inside was the missing red folder.

Evan had delivered a decoy to Warren’s network.

Melissa hid the original beneath headquarters.

The folder contained paper records linking Northstar to twenty-seven staged disappearances, insurance claims, guardianship transfers, and corporate mergers.

One file belonged to Thomas Mercer.

Adam’s father had not been a prisoner.

He had founded Northstar with Warren and Malcolm Sloan.

Thomas designed the disappearance clause.

He used it personally twelve years earlier, abandoning Adam and taking millions from an insurance trust.

Warren had not merely helped conceal him.

He had been his partner.

Adam confronted the chairman.

“Where is my father?”

Warren looked exhausted.

“I have not seen Thomas in six years.”

“Northstar held a room for him.”

“Grant was searching for him too.”

“Why?”

“Thomas kept the master beneficiary ledger.”

The ledger identified who truly controlled every policy and transferred company.

It was not inside the red folder.

Melissa had found it before the staged driveway operation.

Grant kidnapped her because she knew where it was.

Then Adam’s phone received a video.

Melissa stood alone in a motel room.

No Grant visible.

She looked into the camera.

“Adam, I escaped. Do not send police.”

Behind her, on the wall mirror, a man’s reflection appeared.

Thomas Mercer.
