Chapter 8 - The Choice Grant ExpectedAdam refused to deliver Lily.

He also refused to treat the threat as empty.

Ramos placed the hospital under armed protection and transferred Sean to a secure federal medical unit. The note and suitcase were processed without public disclosure.

Adam returned to the boardroom because Melissa’s archive suggested the merger remained central to the plan.

Warren watched him enter.

“Your wife is missing, your daughter is hospitalized, and you still come back here.”

“Grant expected me to abandon the company.”

“Perhaps you should.”

“Perhaps you expected me to.”

Adam opened the merger agreement.

Hidden inside six hundred pages was a continuity clause. If Adam became unavailable before midnight, Warren could approve the sale using emergency board authority.

The purchase price would flow through Northstar trusts.

One trust belonged to Thomas Mercer.

Adam’s dead father.

“Did my father work with you?” Adam asked.

Warren looked toward the windows.

“Thomas believed insurance could protect founders from hostile families.”

“Did he fake his death?”

“He disappeared before I could ask.”

“You paid Northstar to hold him.”

“I paid for private treatment.”

“Against his will?”

Warren said nothing.

The boardroom display activated by itself.

Grant appeared live.

He stood inside a dim room wearing a dark coat.

Melissa sat behind him.

Her hands were tied, but she was conscious.

“Approve the merger,” Grant said, “and Melissa goes home.”

Adam looked at his wife.

She shook her head.

Grant pulled her chair backward.

“You have ten minutes.”

Ramos attempted to trace the signal.

It bounced through Mercer Dynamics’ own servers.

Grant was using the company’s infrastructure.

Adam placed the presentation remote on the table.

“You need my vote?”

“I need your biometric approval.”

“You forged my signature.”

“The archive locked the transfer after the home footage restored.”

Melissa had saved him by activating evidence.

Grant needed Adam physically present to reverse it.

“And Lily?” Adam asked.

“Evelyn becomes temporary guardian until Melissa recovers.”

“You mean until both of us disappear.”

Grant smiled.

“You finally understand the policy.”

Adam activated Melissa’s micro-key again.

A hidden menu appeared.

DEAD-MAN RELEASE.

If he opened it, every Northstar file would transmit to regulators, investors, journalists, and law enforcement.

It might expose protected victims alongside criminals.

Grant saw the menu through the shared screen.

“Do that, and you release every child identity Northstar ever changed.”

Adam stopped.

Grant had mixed evidence with vulnerable people deliberately.

Expose the scheme, and hidden families could be endangered.

Preserve the files, and the conspiracy remained protected.

Melissa spoke quickly.

“Adam, Bluebird.”

Grant struck the camera off-angle.

The word meant something.

Years earlier, Adam and Melissa used Bluebird as a private emergency code. It meant:

The visible threat is not the real threat.

Adam studied the background behind Grant.

A stainless-steel cabinet reflected part of the room.

No windows.

White ceiling lights.

A red EXIT sign reversed in the reflection.

He recognized it.

The room was not at Northstar.

It was beneath Mercer Dynamics’ headquarters.

The company’s executive emergency shelter occupied two floors below the parking garage.

Grant and Melissa were inside the building.

Ramos quietly redirected officers toward the elevators.

Adam kept Grant talking.

“You brought her into my headquarters?”

“You brought all of us here when you built the archive.”

The shelter access log showed one person had entered forty minutes earlier.

Warren Sloan.

Warren remained seated in the boardroom.

His badge had been cloned—or someone else was using his identity again.

Then the conference-room doors locked automatically.

Grant smiled from the screen.

“You thought the boardroom was your alibi.”

The ventilation system stopped.

May you like

“You never understood it was the second crime scene.”

👉 Melissa’s code revealed she was hidden beneath the headquarters, but Grant sealed Adam and the executives inside the boardroom before police could reach her.
